The National Weather Service (NWS) in Mobile, Alabama, has issued a Rip Current Statement for dangerous rip currents on the coasts of Escambia, Santa Rosa and Okaloosa counties in Florida, and Mobile and Baldwin counties in Alabama.

The statement is in effect from 7 a.m. CDT on Oct. 24 through Monday evening, Oct. 26, according to the alert issued at 1:17 a.m. CDT on Oct. 24.

The alert says rip currents can sweep even the best swimmers away from shore into deeper water. It advises:

  • Swim near a lifeguard.
  • If caught in a rip current, relax and float. Don’t swim against the current.
  • If able, swim in a direction following the shoreline.
  • If unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help.
