PCS to Eglin or Hurlburt: what Florida asks for a new driver license, tags and voter card
Active-duty service members moving to Eglin Air Force Base, Hurlburt Field or another Emerald Coast installation can keep driving on a valid out-of-state driver license. “There is no requirement to obtain a Florida driver license when military and their family members move to Florida,” the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles said as of Oct. 30, 2026.
The same goes for license plates: out-of-state residents stationed in Florida can keep their home state’s plate under federal law, per the FLHSMV military registration page. If you choose a Florida plate, you can claim an exemption from the $225 initial registration fee with form HSMV 82002.
Do I need a Florida driver license if I’m stationed at Eglin?
No, as long as your current license is valid. FLHSMV says service members and their families “who live and drive in Florida” may do so with a valid out-of-state license. That covers spouses and dependents with their own valid licenses.
Many families still switch, for example when a home-state license is about to expire or when a spouse starts a Florida job. If you apply for a Florida license, FLHSMV lists these 2026 fees:
| Item | Fee | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Original Class E driver license | $48 | FLHSMV fees |
| Initial registration fee, vehicle new to Florida | $225 (military can request exemption, HSMV 82002) | FLHSMV fees |
| Original title, used vehicle | $85.25 | FLHSMV fees |
| Original or replacement license plate | $28 | FLHSMV fees |
| “Veteran” designation, when it is the only change | Free | FLHSMV military |
Registration renewals also include a base vehicle tax that depends on weight, such as $14.50 for a car up to 2,499 pounds, plus other state fees.
Should I register my car in Florida?
You do not have to if you are a resident of another state stationed here. If you register in Florida anyway, complete form HSMV 82002, the Initial Registration Fee Exemption Affidavit, and bring it to a local service center to avoid the $225 charge.
Florida residents who later deploy out of state can keep out-of-state insurance on a vehicle that is out of state, which helps avoid a license suspension, but then must renew registration in person or by mail rather than online, per FLHSMV. Active Florida National Guard members get one tax-free plate registration or renewal per year with form HSMV 83030.
What if I’m a Florida resident assigned outside Florida?
FLHSMV can issue a military extension card that keeps a Florida license valid while you serve out of state. It lasts until 90 days after discharge, or until you return to live in Florida. You need the Military Personnel and Dependents Affidavit, form HSMV 73641, and a copy of current orders. You can also renew a license up to 18 months before it expires.
How do military families register to vote here?
It depends on which state you consider home. To vote in Florida you must be a Florida resident, and the registration deadline is 29 days before an election, per the Florida Division of Elections. You can register at RegisterToVoteFlorida.gov.
Service members and families who keep another state as their legal residence can vote in that state with the Federal Post Card Application, which registers you and requests a mailed ballot at the same time, per the Florida Division of Elections military voting page. Florida election offices must send ballots to absent military voters at least 45 days before each election. The Federal Voting Assistance Program at FVAP.gov publishes residency guidance for military voters.
Can I add “Veteran” to a Florida license?
Yes. Veterans who live in Florida can add the designation at any service center by showing a DD-214 with an honorable discharge, and a replacement license is free when that is the only change, per FLHSMV. Veterans with a 100% service-connected disability get the designation at no fee and can get a “DV” plate at no charge.
Who do I call?
For licenses, plates and the Veteran designation, go to a Florida driver license and motor vehicle service center; FLHSMV lists them on its website, and its military page above has the forms. For voting, call your county supervisor of elections.
