Emerald Coast businesses show up on Google Maps and in Google’s AI answers through a verified, accurate Google Business Profile, not through payment or special code. Google ranks local results by relevance, distance and prominence, and says “There’s no way to request or pay for a better local ranking on Google,” according to its Business Profile Help page, checked Oct. 29, 2026. For AI Overviews and AI Mode, Google says there are no extra requirements beyond normal search eligibility.

For businesses in Okaloosa, Walton, Santa Rosa and Bay counties reopening after Hurricane Isaias, which made landfall near Destin on Oct. 9, 2026, the most urgent step is updating hours and status on the profile.

How does Google decide which local businesses appear on Google Maps?

Google ranks local results on Google Maps and Search using three factors, according to Google Business Profile Help as of Oct. 29, 2026.

Factor What Google says it means What a business controls
Relevance “How well a Business Profile matches what someone is searching for” Accurate categories, services and description
Distance “How far each business is from the customer who’s searching” Correct address or service area
Prominence “How well-known a business is” Reviews, links, mentions and replies to customers

Google says businesses with complete and accurate information “are more likely to show up in local search results.”

Can you pay Google for a better ranking on Google Maps?

No. Google Business Profile Help states: “There’s no way to request or pay for a better local ranking on Google.” Any agency or caller promising a guaranteed top spot on Google Maps is promising something Google says it does not sell. Google Ads are a separate, labeled paid product and do not change the free local ranking.

Who is eligible for a Google Business Profile?

A business is eligible for a Google Business Profile only if it has a physical location customers visit or if it travels to customers, according to Google’s Business Profile guidelines. Virtual offices are not eligible.

  • Storefront businesses (a restaurant in Destin, a shop in Panama City Beach) show their street address.
  • Service-area businesses (a home-based plumber in Crestview, a mobile detailer in Navarre) should hide their address and list the areas they serve.
  • Business name must match the real-world name used on signs and paperwork, with no taglines, keywords, phone numbers, URLs or ALL CAPS.
  • Categories describe what the business is, not keywords; the description cannot contain links.

How does Google Business Profile verification work?

Google chooses the verification method for each business, such as a phone call or text, email, live video or a postcard, according to Google’s verification help page.

  1. Request verification in the Business Profile.
  2. If Google sends a postcard, it takes about 14 days to arrive, and the code expires after 30 days.
  3. Do not edit the business name, address or category while waiting for verification.
  4. Google’s review can take up to five business days after the code is entered.

Google never asks for your verification code. Anyone who calls or emails asking for the code is not Google. Walton County warned of fake emails targeting residents and businesses on Oct. 19, 2026, according to a Walton County alert, and storm-recovery periods draw these schemes.

How do businesses appear in Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode?

Google says there are “no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary,” according to Google Search Central, page last updated Dec. 10, 2025, and checked Oct. 29, 2026.

  • No special files: Google states, “You don’t need to create new machine readable files, AI text files, or markup to appear in these features.”
  • No special schema: “There’s also no special schema.org structured data that you need to add.”
  • Keep the profile current: Google lists “Checking that your Merchant Center and Business Profile information is up-to-date” as a best practice.
  • Measuring it: visits from AI features are counted in Google Search Console’s Performance report under the “Web” search type.

Other AI assistants, such as ChatGPT, Perplexity and Apple’s Siri, have not published equivalent official guidance for local businesses, so no specific steps can be confirmed for them.

What should Emerald Coast businesses update after Hurricane Isaias?

Businesses that closed, changed hours or moved after Hurricane Isaias should update their Google Business Profile so Google Maps and AI answers do not send customers to a closed door. Google Business Profile Help lists keeping “business hours, including special store hours” up to date among its ranking tips.

What changed What to update
Temporarily closed for repairs Mark the profile temporarily closed, then reopen it when ready
Reduced or changed hours Regular hours, or special hours for specific dates
Operating from a temporary location Address, or switch to a service area if serving customers on site
New phone or website Contact details in the profile
Reopened Hours, a recent photo and a post announcing the reopening
