Gulf red snapper season reopens in Florida on Friday, Oct. 30, 2026, and stays open through Sunday, Nov. 1, for anglers fishing from private boats and state-permitted charter boats off the Emerald Coast, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC). After that weekend, the season opens on set weekends and holidays through Jan. 4, 2027. The limit is two red snapper per person, each at least 16 inches long, and captain and crew may keep none.

These rules apply the same way in Okaloosa, Walton, Santa Rosa and Bay counties, because the season is set by the state for all Gulf waters off Florida, both state and federal.

What are the red snapper size and bag limits in Florida?

The 2026 Gulf red snapper limits for recreational anglers are set by the FWC:

  • Minimum size: 16 inches total length.
  • Bag limit: two fish per person per day.
  • Captain and crew: zero. Captain and crew on for-hire boats may not keep red snapper.
  • Where: Gulf state and federal waters off Florida.

Do you need a license to fish for red snapper?

Most anglers 16 and older need a Florida saltwater fishing license, plus a free State Reef Fish Angler designation when fishing for red snapper from a private boat, according to the FWC saltwater license page. The State Reef Fish Angler designation also covers grouper, gray triggerfish and amberjack, must be renewed every year and has no exemptions.

Saltwater fishing license prices, as of Oct. 27, 2026, per the FWC:

License Florida resident Nonresident
3-day Not offered $17
7-day Not offered $30
Annual $17 $47
Five-year $79 Not offered
Shoreline only (no boat) $0 Not offered

Licenses are sold at GoOutdoorsFlorida.com, at county tax collector offices and at license vendors, which may add a 50-cent issuance fee. License fees are not refundable, according to the FWC.

Who can fish without a Florida fishing license?

Several groups do not need a Florida saltwater fishing license, according to the FWC “Do I need a license” page:

  • Anglers under 16.
  • Florida residents 65 and older with proof of age and residency.
  • Passengers on a for-hire boat (charter, guide or party boat) that holds a valid charter license.
  • Anglers on a pier that holds a saltwater pier license.
  • Some anglers with disabilities, public benefits or military status, as listed by the FWC.

Charter passengers are covered by the boat’s license, which is why a fishing charter is the simplest way for visitors to the Emerald Coast to fish for red snapper without buying a license.

What else can you keep while red snapper is open?

Bottom fishing for red snapper often brings up other reef fish, and their 2026 Gulf seasons differ, as of Oct. 27, 2026, per the FWC:

Species Status Limits
Gray triggerfish Open through Dec. 31, 2026 15 inches fork length, one per person (FWC)
Red grouper Open year-round in state waters 20 inches minimum (FWC)
Gag grouper Closed in state waters since Oct. 1, 2026 Season ran Sept. 1 to 30 (FWC)
Greater amberjack Closed in state waters since Oct. 14, 2026 Season ran Sept. 1 to Oct. 13 (FWC)

A fish caught during a closed season must be released.
