When the send-off is

The notice’s headline refers to a send-off on Nov. 11, but the text of the posting does not describe that event. No time or location for the send-off appears in the posting.

Where the reef will be

The ship will be placed in the Gulf about 22 nautical miles southwest of Destin-Fort Walton Beach, according to the notice.

What the county says the reef will do

The notice says the SS United States holds the record for the fastest ocean liner, set in 1952. It says the ship will become a home for numerous species of marine life and a premier diving destination. These are the notice’s stated goals, not results.

What the notice does not say

The posting does not say whether navigation will be closed or restricted near the site. It also does not say what happens if weather forces a delay. Check the county’s own announcements before planning a trip to the site or to the send-off.

The Chamber’s listing was dated Oct. 27, 2026.
