First sunrise of 2027 in Destin: 6:42 a.m., and what’s closed on New Year’s Day
The first sunrise of 2027 over Destin comes at about 6:42 a.m. Central time on Friday, Jan. 1, 2027, according to NOAA’s solar calculator equations. The sun comes up toward the east-southeast, at about 116 degrees on a compass.

What time is sunrise on New Year’s Day in Destin?
About 6:42 a.m. CST. Plan to be in place by about 6:15 a.m.: the sky starts to brighten well before the sun clears the horizon. Face east-southeast. On Destin’s Gulf beaches, which face south, that means looking east along the shoreline rather than straight out over the water.
The time is calculated from NOAA’s equations for Destin’s location, so it can differ by a minute from other apps, and clouds can hide the moment itself.
Can I watch the sunrise from a state park?
Not the first one. Florida state parks open at 8 a.m. and close at sunset every day of the year, Jan. 1 included, per the Florida State Parks rules. That is more than an hour after sunrise. Henderson Beach State Park in Destin opens to visitors at 8 a.m. on New Year’s Day like any other day.
State parks are still a good plan for later in the morning. Some visitor centers close two days a week, so check the park’s own page before you go.
Are there First Day Hikes near Destin?
Florida State Parks usually lead First Day Hikes on Jan. 1, but the list comes out late: the 2026 list was published Dec. 30, 2025. Parks near Destin that could take part include Henderson Beach, Rocky Bayou and Fred Gannon in Okaloosa County, and Grayton Beach, Topsail Hill Preserve, Deer Lake and Eden Gardens in Walton County. We will add the 2027 hikes to our New Year’s Day guide when the official list is out, around Dec. 30, 2026.

What should I bring for a sunrise on the beach?
Early January mornings on the Gulf are usually the coldest part of the day, and the wind off the water makes it feel colder. Bring a jacket, a blanket to sit on and a small flashlight for the walk to the sand in the dark. Use a marked beach access and stay off the dunes.

Police add DUI patrols over the holiday as part of the national Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign run by NHTSA. If you are out on Dec. 31 and plan to catch the sunrise, choose a designated driver, book a ride or stay within walking distance.
