How local schools are rated

  • Florida School Grades (FL)

A to F for each public school and district, from the percent of possible points earned on state tests, learning gains, graduation and acceleration. "I" means incomplete.

Florida grades every public school A to F on the same scale, so you can compare schools across the four counties. Grades come from state tests, learning gains and, in high schools, graduation and college and career acceleration.

Every public school's official grade from the state, next to last year's, so you can see which way each school is going. "Combination" means a school that covers more than one level, like K-8 or 6-12.

Military families: your rights when you move here

Florida is part of the Interstate Compact on Educational Opportunity for Military Children. When you transfer from another state, the new school must enroll and place your child using unofficial or hand-carried records while it waits for the official ones, and the old school must send the official records within 10 days.

You get 30 days from enrollment to get any required immunizations. Your child keeps their grade level, even for kindergarten, and the school first honors the courses they were in.

Children can join sports and clubs after the deadlines if they otherwise qualify. Seniors can have similar courses waived, have the sending state's exit exams accepted or get the diploma from the old school.

Bay, Okaloosa and Santa Rosa are Florida Purple Star Districts (2024-2027), a state designation for districts that support military families. Ask your school for its military liaison.

Parents, help keep this guide right

  • Calendar changed? If your district moves a day off or a make-up day, tell us the date and where it was announced. We check it against the district. Send it.
  • School event open to the public? Plays, fairs and fundraisers can go on our events calendar. Send it.

What readers send is checked by our editors and published as "Reader reports", apart from the official calendars. We never publish your email, and we don't publish names or photos of students.

Questions parents ask

When is the next day with no school?

It depends on the district. The cards at the top of this page show the next day off for Okaloosa, Walton and Santa Rosa from each district's own 2026-27 calendar. Bay's 2026-27 calendar is still posted as a draft, so check the district.

When is spring break 2027?

Okaloosa: Mar 15-19, 2027. Walton and Santa Rosa: Mar 22-26, 2027. Bay: check the district's calendar.

How do I know if schools are closed for a hurricane?

Each district announces its own closings on its website and official channels. Walton's plan also uses local radio and TV. Public schools can open as shelters; your county's emergency management announces which ones.

How are Florida schools graded?

The Florida Department of Education grades every public school A to F each year, from state tests, learning gains and, in high schools, graduation and acceleration. Because it is one state scale, you can compare schools in all four counties.

We are a military family moving here. What do schools have to do?

Under the Interstate Compact, the school must enroll your child with hand-carried records, give you 30 days for immunizations, keep their grade level and first honor their course placement. Bay, Okaloosa and Santa Rosa are Florida Purple Star Districts.
