Florida’s 7-day return rule: what Black Friday shoppers in Okaloosa County should know
If a Florida store does not post a “no refund” sign where you pay, you can return an unused item within seven days with proof of purchase, under Florida Statutes 501.142. That rule covers every shopper in Okaloosa, Walton, Santa Rosa and Bay counties on Black Friday, Friday, Nov. 27, 2026, and for the rest of the holiday season.
Most large retailers post their own return policies, and those policies, not the seven-day rule, decide what happens to your return. Here is how the law works, what it does not cover and how to protect yourself before you shop.
What does Florida’s return law say?
Florida Statutes 501.142 requires a retailer that does not offer refunds or exchanges to tell you so with a sign. The notice has to be posted at the point of sale, such as the register, the entrance or the item itself. If the store has no such notice, the law gives you the right to return an unused item:
- within seven days of purchase,
- with proof of purchase, such as a receipt,
- and the item must be unused.
The store can then give you a refund or an exchange.
Which purchases are not covered?
The seven-day rule does not apply to:
- food and perishable items,
- goods that were custom-made or custom-altered for you,
- items you have used.
It also does not override a store’s posted policy. If a store posts “All sales final” or “No refunds” in a place the law accepts, it does not have to take the item back.
What if the store has its own return policy?
Most chain stores and outlet brands post their own policy, and many give more time than the law. The Federal Trade Commission notes that many stores set 30- or 90-day return windows, often printed on the receipt. Some shorten the window for electronics or extend it for holiday purchases.
On Black Friday, read the policy before you pay, especially for doorbuster items. Some stores exclude clearance or “final sale” items from returns altogether.
What happens if I lose the receipt?
Without a receipt, the FTC says you will likely get store credit, often at the item’s lowest sale price. That can mean less than you paid if the item went on sale after you bought it. Gift receipts help the person who receives the gift return or exchange it without revealing the price.
How can I protect myself on Black Friday?
- Look for a “no refund” or “all sales final” sign before you buy.
- Ask the cashier for the return deadline on doorbuster and clearance items.
- Keep the receipt and the original packaging until the return window closes.
- Ask for a gift receipt for every gift.
- If you buy gift cards from an exchange site, read reviews and check that the site guarantees the cards are valid, as the FTC recommends.
- Photograph the receipt; thermal paper fades.
Does sales tax come back with a refund?
A refund returns what you paid for the item, including tax. Sales tax on the Emerald Coast is 8% in Okaloosa, Bay and Santa Rosa counties and 7% in Walton County, per the Florida Department of Revenue’s 2026 surtax table. Store credit is usually issued for the amount on the receipt.
Who to contact about a refund problem
If a store refuses a return that the law requires, you can file a complaint with the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, which runs the state consumer hotline at 1-800-435-7352 (HELP-FLA). Keep the receipt, the store’s name and address and a note of who you spoke with.
