Veterans Day falls on Wednesday, Nov. 11, 2026, according to the federal holiday schedule published by the U.S. courts. In Fort Walton Beach, a city that lives next door to Eglin Air Force Base and Hurlburt Field, it is not an abstract date. It is the neighbor who just got back, the spouse counting the weeks, the family that keeps a chair at the table.

So this week the Emerald Coast Dispatch Books Desk picked two holiday love stories about exactly that: somebody coming home from war, and somebody waiting. Both are about the holidays, both are about second chances, and both are gentle enough to read on a cool November evening by the Sound.

Which holiday romance is about a Marine veteran?

A Virgin River Christmas, by Robyn Carr, is the one to start with. A year after her husband, Bobby, died of wounds from the Iraq War, 27-year-old Marcie Sullivan drives to the mountain town of Virgin River, California, to find Ian Buchanan, the Marine who saved Bobby’s life. He has never answered her letters, according to the author’s official page for the book.

She finds a 35-year-old former Marine living alone in the forest above town, carrying more from his service than he will say. Marcie does not give up easily, and the book is about what happens when someone refuses to let a good man disappear. Carr’s publisher, MIRA, first released it in November 2008, and new editions with the Netflix series artwork came out on Oct. 26, 2021, according to the same page.

If you have watched the show, you know the town. The book gives Ian and Marcie the time the screen never could.

Which Christmas novel starts with a note about a father at war?

The Santa Suit, by Mary Kay Andrews, starts in an old farmhouse. Newly divorced Ivy Perkins buys the Four Roses without having seen it and starts cleaning it out. In a closet she finds a decades-old Santa Claus suit, and in its pocket a note: a little girl’s Christmas wish that her father come home from the war, according to Macmillan, the book’s publisher.

Ivy sets out to learn who wrote it and whether the wish came true. Along the way the town takes her in, and the book delivers what its publisher promises: a family reunion, a mystery solved and a second chance at love. It is a short novel, the kind you can finish on a holiday afternoon.

Why read military love stories on Veterans Day?

Because on the Emerald Coast, they are local stories. Okaloosa County is a military county, and the waiting in these books is the waiting many readers here know: the letters, the phone that does not ring, the first holiday after. Both books treat that with care. Neither is a war novel. They are about the people at home, and about the moment someone comes back.

They also make good gifts for someone who serves or served. A book is easy to mail, easy to pack and easy to share with a spouse.

Are these holiday romances spicy?

No. A Virgin River Christmas is a warm, emotional romance with some heat, built on grief and healing. The Santa Suit is a sweet holiday novel with a love story inside a family mystery. Both work for readers who want feelings more than steam.

Where should you read them in Fort Walton Beach?

Somewhere with a view of the water, on a weekday. Veterans Day falls midweek this year, so there is no long weekend. That makes it a good excuse for an evening one: a blanket, the sunset over the Sound and one chapter for every veteran you are thinking of.

The book to bring: A Virgin River Christmas, if you only take one. Bring tissues.
