The National Weather Service (NWS) in Mobile, Alabama, has issued a Rip Current Statement for the coast, in effect until 6:00 p.m. CST on Wednesday, Nov. 4. The statement covers Escambia Coastal, Santa Rosa Coastal and Okaloosa Coastal counties in Florida, and Mobile Coastal and Baldwin Coastal counties in Alabama.

According to the NWS, rip currents “can sweep even the best swimmers away from shore into deeper water.” Its safety advice:

  • Swim near a lifeguard.
  • If caught in a rip current, relax and float. Don’t swim against the current.
  • If able, swim in a direction following the shoreline.
  • If unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help.
